Survival Checklist, Get Prepared Today, Sunset Survival Kits


FEMA and the U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security recommend including the following essential emergency supplies, at a minimum, for disaster preparedness:

  • Water – 1 gal per day for each person and pet, for at least 3 days, for drinking, cooking and sanitation
  • Food – Minimum 3-day supply of shelf-stable food rations
  • Manual can opener and eating utensils

  • Radio, battery-powered or hand-crank, and NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries.
    • Light sticks are also convenient to have on hand.
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Emergency whistle to signal for help
  • Dust mask to help filter contaminated air
  • Plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal hygiene and sanitation
  • Wrench, pliers and/or gas/water shut-off tool to turn off utilities
  • Local maps

In addition to the above Survival Checklist, please take into consideration any special needs of family members and pets:

  • Prescription medications and glasses, hearing aid batteries
  • Infant formula and diapers
  • Emergency pet food, leash and collar
  • Important family documents such as copies of insurance policies, identification and bank account records stored in waterproof, portable container
  • Books, games, puzzles or other activities for children
  • Keep a picture of your family and pets with your emergency kit, in case you get separated during a disaster
