Get Prepared Now with an Emergency Kit – Store 72 Hours of Survival Supplies
Published on  Updated on

Why do US Government safety experts recommend having survival supplies on hand to meet your family’s needs for a minimum of 72 hours? Do you have enough emergency supplies stored for your family?

Learn why it’s essential to make a plan and get your survival kit in place today – in home, car and workplace!

After a disaster or emergency, local officials and relief workers are not always able to reach everyone immediately. A disaster situation may impact the ability of emergency responders to reach you and your loved ones. It is a good idea to plan for the loss of basic services, such as electricity, gas, water, sewage treatment, and telephones for at least 72-hours at minimum. Having non-perishable food, water, and medical supplies for several days is even better. Your supply kit should contain certain essential items to help you manage during these outages. The items listed below are a great starting point. You may also need to consider medications, any special dietary restrictions, and food for pets.

The Federal Government at Ready.gov recommends building or purchasing a basic emergency supply kit containing the following items:

  • Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation
  • Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food (food that does not need refrigeration)
  • Battery-powered or hand-crank radio and a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Whistle to signal for help
  • Dust mask to help filter contaminated air, and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
  • Moist towelettes, trash bags, and plastic ties for personal hygiene and sanitation
  • Emergency shut-off wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
  • Manual can opener for food
  • Local maps
  • Cell phone with chargers, power inverter, or solar charger
